School Cancels Prom to Spite Lesbian

This story really cheeses my cracker.  As does the comments on the yahoo story.  

"I am sick to death of these "special individuals", with "special needs" keep ruining it for the rest of us who are healthy minded, law abiding individuals.

So I go the contact information for that school and wrote them a letter....

Dear Superintendent Teresa McNeece,


I am sure you are getting much feedback concerning the school board decision to cancel this years public prom. I'm sure that while you are getting great support for your moral stance, many would prefer that you keep the prom intact. I myself do not live in your state, and must confess I have no vested interest, I am just a concerned citizen with some questions. While I think you were standing up for closely held beliefs, I unfortunately am a yankee and am confused by some aspects of the story. Perhaps it is a failing of the new media which reported it and I hope you can fill me in


1) I am often told of Southern Hospitality(tm). I am told that we in the north lack such manners and social cohesion. I'm often told that southerners are friendly folks, very affable and believe strongly in their communities, banding together for the common good and all. I think this stereotype is in err since the Southern Hospitable response to the Promgate has been exclusion and mob rule. Clearly I am mistaken in what Southern hospitality and manners mean. I had thought it was inclusion and nobility while in reality it appears to be about exclusion and pettiness. Would you really rather hurt the whole community to spite a few 'bad eggs' rather than be tolerant? Is that what Southern Hospitality is about? Hurting many for the sake of excluding a few? I am afraid I am very confused, please clarify


2) I know religion is important and influential in the south, far more than up here in our godless blue states. However, if such an action as yours was based on biblical beliefs, I confess I am befuddled again. I read what people reported Jesus (whom I understand is a figure of some note in the predominant sects in your demographics) was about. I'm told by most "peace, love, forgiveness, understanding" and all that. I am told he was against judgment "Let he without sin cast the first stone" and "do not point out a splinter in thy brothers eye while ignoring the log in yours". I can't see how these tenants fit with spite and bigotry. So, I naturally went and read the bible myself looking for the justification. If your reasons were biblical, my dear ma'am I'm afraid you are in grave error. While the bible clearly says homosexuality is an abomination not to be tolerated, you're actions are not in line with the bible. The bible orders you to take any homosexuals and put them to death. I'm sorry, but canceling prom is simply not a suitable equivalent. Which religious view does the school believe justies it's actions? New Testement which has no word on killing gays from Christ, or the Old Testament which says you're not going nearly far enough? I respect you for standing up for your beliefs, but if you're going to do it, by dash, do it right!


3) What conceivable problem did you have with allowed ladies of the non-male persuasion to attend your ball? How did it hurt you or the other students in any way? I'm lead to understand that we are in a free country, where our freedoms end exactly where other's begin. Was this couple to infringe on another's rights? No one has the right not to be offended. On the contrary, if someone is offended by another, unless that other is infringing upon their rights, acting against them is unjust. I am fully aware many students and teachers would be made uncomfortable, but I do not think it is in the school authorities responsibilities to appease them. I think this is a matter of freedom and tolerance, which again, I am told are important to patriots. The price of freedom is the tolerance to respect others freedom. However, you live in an area that once committed high treason and fought a war for your 'right' to impose your will on the rights of others, so you may have a different view point on liberty and freedom. If so please explain to me what these ideals mean in the former confederate states (many of which still have race segregated proms...why do you not to that as well?).


4) What is it about this issue that would turn a normally reasonable and rational person such as your self into a shrieking hysterical effigy of a human being? I am unable to understand how someone possessing logic, reason, and cognitive faculties could possibly over react to such a minor thing. What about this triggers such a powerful transformation? The closest we have in the north is when the barista fails to correctly deliver our mocha latte at the corner Starbucks. Please explain the cultural context of this odd anthropological reaction.


Thank you for your time and I eagerly await your response. Understanding is the corner stone of harmony and I believe dialogue such as this will do wonders for breaching the clear cultural gap between us yankees and our more down to earth brothers to the south.

Hugo-award-nominated science fiction author Dr. Peter Watts is in serious legal trouble after he was beaten, pepper-sprayed and imprisoned by American border guards at a Canada U.S. border crossing December 8. This is a call to friends, fans and colleagues to help. Peter, a Canadian citizen, was on his way back to Canada after helping a friend move house to Nebraska over the weekend. He was stopped at the border crossing at Port Huron, Michigan by U.S. border police for a search of his rental vehicle. When Peter got out of the car and questioned the nature of the search, the gang of border guards subjected him to a beating, restrained him and pepper sprayed him. At the end of it, local police laid a felony charge of assault against a federal officer against Peter. On Wednesday, he posted bond and walked was taken across the border to Canada in shirtsleeves (he was released by Port Huron officials with his car and possessions locked in impound, into a winter storm that evening). He's home safe. For now. But he has to go back to Michigan to face the charge brought against him.
The charge is spurious. But it's also very serious. It could mean two years in prison in the United States, and a ban on travel in that country for the rest of Peter's life. Peter is mounting a vigorous defense, but it's going to be expensive - he's effectively going up against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and he needs the best legal help that he can get.
He's got that help, courtesy of one of the top criminal lawyers in the State of Michigan. We, Peter's friends and colleagues here in Canada, want to make sure he gets the help he needs financially to come out of this nightmare whole.
The need for that help is real. While Peter is a critically successful science fiction writer, he is by no means a best-selling author. Without help, the weight of his legal fees could literally put him on the street by spring.

"Who Watches the Watchmen?" springs to mind.  The idea our culture has of authoritarian tyranny is of a widespread systematic oppression.  However, as the above indicates, small localized abuses of power and smug douchery can be just as dangerous and even more insidious.  Fiction does abound with the small town Sherif, big fish in a small pond, despot.  The 'untouchable' status of homeland security and other systems is giving them a lot of power and little over sight.   Everyone is concerned about those damn foreigners, illegal immigrants that we're willing to let a few innocents get their heads smashed in why not.  The fact that police both local and apparently federal have a disturbingly common disposition that they can push around and bully low wage people is problematic.  I have seen the traffic cops feel free to be down right nasty and harsh as all hell on lower or middle class folks, they know that they can't afford the legal dues to actually get justice.  This is the same thing.  Peter Watts does well for himself, but he's not wealthy and can't take on their authority all that well.  That's what this abuse relies on...we don't have the coin to pay for the justice.  It's sick and the way the police disproportionately lays the lawhammer down on the lower and lower middle classes than it does the upper or white color is generating a disrespect for their authority.  We don't see police as defenders of our rights or laws.  We lower folks see them as nuisances, bullies to avoid.  Dicks with guns who will jump with glee the second you step out of line and hit you with every alphabet soup violation they can catch you on.  Meanwhile, Bankers and CEOS steal billions.  ENRON guys more or less got away scottfree, Exxon gets away with international crimes, etc.  Hell the only reason they cared at all about Bernie Madoff is because he attacked rich people.  With the common joe getting the short stick of the law, taking more of the burdens that come from a lawful society while reaping less of the benefits it's no wonder inner-cities have a 'stop snitching' campaign.  More and more in this country we are growing to fear and despise our police instead of rely on them.  The little bits the MAN does, blue sheild, looking the other way for rich folk, letting permits slide for upscale establishments, focusing on drugs and prostitution and traffic tickets instead of grand larceny or murder, add up.  The law seems to be stacked against most people and this is a problem.  Above the police were able to be as dickish as possible and for their dirty actions they get to lay down an arrest and smugly go home at night.  In the end we need someone to watch our watchmen, to help insure they won't disperse 'justice' just because they know their victims can't afford to challenge them.



Edit: the apologist comments are really disgusting.  Regardless if someone was snarky or mouthed off, police do NOT have the right to beat them up, mace them, and abandon them in the snow.  Innocent until proven guilty and free speech and all that shit no one actually cares about.

I take it that most people by  now have been informed that directo Roman Polanski has been arrested for his decades old crime of drugging and rapeing a 13 year old girl.

Considering our law system won't give even the most law abiding, struggling, poor citizen a break even on something minor like a traffic ticket, giving a break to the prosperous and affluent for a serious crime is a double standard that is inexcusable.

To put it in in-context perspective, the idea that people are judged based on their contributions to the arts and society is roughtly the moral system Hannibal Lecter uses.  True, Hannibal is typcially tough on child related offenses

So yeah, until proven otherwise I'm going to go with the information I have and say Beck, Hannity, and the Fox News machine are damn fucking responsible for this.  This isn't some kid playing GTA and running over a hooker.  This is people daily saying "YOUR GONNA DIE THE GOVERNMENT IS EVIL SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE" and then they act surprised when someone goes out and DOES something.  I saw this coming, I knew it was only a matter of time before someone took Beck and his nonsense seriously.  People like him are a disease, a fucking memetic disease.  By all accounts Sparkman was a good guy; an educator, altruistic and patriotic.  That he was killed volunteering for his country makes him as much a hero to me as the Iraq vets we are neglecting.  He is a casualty in the war for America's soul and sanity and I salute him.  And with the same hand I give a one digit salute to Glen Beck, demented piece of trash.

Real Life is Unrealistic: Too Dumb too Live

Once again it seems that life will indeed imitate art...or rather art will prove to me that life is a chaotic malestrom without rhyme nor reason.  For this example, open up your nostalgia bibles and turn to the book of the Burton verse 1989.

 Tim Burton and John Peters released the first serious adaptation of Batman the general non-comicy public became aware of; though really full credit for returning batman his lost dignity goes to Frank Miller, Allan Moore, and of course Denny O'Neil (or as I call him, Jesus).  While over all a decent movie florishing under Burton's stylistic German expressionist slant, it did have a bit of a campy feel.  Lacking the gritty realism of the later Dark Knight franchise, Burton's Batman had the feel of a Carnival of the Soul.  The focus wasn't on presenting a story as it might actually occur...but basically putting on a giant Cirque du Soleil show.

Anyway... one of the biggest problems I had with the movie, the single thing that broke my suspension of disbelief in a film involving Jack Nicholson poisoning people with laughing gas and Michael Keton dressing up as a homicidal fury, was the third act in which the Joker lures the entire city of Gotham like lambs to a slaughter.  The Joker throws a parade flinging fists full of money out to the crowd, which successfully draws them out into the streets.  Of course he plans to just poison the fuckers.  And everyone should have known that because he'd spent the whole movie...poisoning people.  His motives were transparently clear!  Imagine if you will that Osama Bin Ladin comes on TV announces he's throwing a parade and giving away money and invites everyone to gather themselves into a crowded street to grab their share.  What the frak do you THINK will happen if anyone is dumb enough to show up?  This was so stupid, that I couldn't buy it.  Surely people had enough self interest NOT to do something transparently deleterious to themselves.

He has every right to make outrageous statements sure, but equally damn right companies are correct in jumping ship. I'm going to make the prediction hat now that it's hitting his pocket he'll offer an "explanation/apology" to try to court back the sponsors. Nice to see people waking up and ending their support of his make-believe journalism career.
