Sex Museum Photo Tour Part 1

My Trip to the Sexeum

So my birthday was this weekend, fulfilling the last piece of the February Triforce Weekend (Darwin/Lincoln Day, Ing Day, Valentine's Day). For this weekend my special Lady (links to her blog and craft shop, go support her dang it), took me into NYC to see the Museum of Sex, bum bum buuuuuuum.

Surprising it is NOT just them taking all the porno stores Giuliani chased away and redressing them as a 'museum" it was an actually entertaining and educational museum of the variety of sexy time stuff. So here we go with my blog picture tour recap.

So let's start the picture tour...

First things first

Pen Stations is weeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrddddddddddddddddddddd

After looking for the subway (the subway system is a blight on a city that is otherwise a shinning example of civic engineering) we finally got unlost and made it to the museum.

If you can't read the front let me blow (hehe) that up for ya

Good, lord this place is going to be special…

Anyway, the entrance doubles as a gift shop. There's some good things, some odd things, and some things that must be destroyed with fire, more on that later. A lot of the stuff is classy and upscale, you know for sex toys, but you can (I'm told) get cheaper elsewhere. There are a lot of books there that I thought were cool or funny, but again nothing you really can't get on Amazon or the like…so the only stuff of note is the nightmare fuel, which I'll mercifully spare you…for now.

The museum is made up of 3-5 (depending how you count) galleries. From what I can gather two of those are sort of cycled out with new exhibits seasonally, while the rest are pernement artifact and art displays. The museum itself is really a mix between an art gallery and a historical museum.

The first gallery, which was a special, was a history of contraceptives (high focus on the condom). There's a lot of actual, legit, entertaining trivia here.

WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LIES IN THE DICKS OF MEN!?"]

Proto-Condom
literally a 'rubber sheeth'

There was a gallery of condom box art that was interesting.

I'm sure now Sarah Pallin will be listing me in her growing laundry list of "people who must be reminded that I have a downe syndrome baby"...cause you know anyone who brings up anything tangentially related incurs her bespectacled wrath.

Of course, Japan is well represented in the museum.

There was much to learn on the history of the condom.
Apparently, Eastern European Jews played a big part in the condom.

Good Lord he was the Dr. Strangelove of rubbers!

Comedy, Comics, and Condoms; the three gifts the Jews gave America.

Of course now knowing that, it makes THIS condom all the more WTF.

*Head asplodes*
I think the worst part for me, is that that could very well have come from the company the German's seized from Jewish businessmen.

Surprisingly, the nazi's on a whole are also well represented in the Museum
(mostly in the naturalist movement stuff)

Moving on...

You may ask, "Do they have anything on sex ed or condom awareness raising?"
Why yes...yes they do

A series of condom educational commercials using sex muppets.

30 seconds after this the frog is totally all over that scientist.

In another video of that series not-Groover also gets his Snuffleupagus chopped off (and then sown back on)

I'll spare you that image.

There are also some subtle political commentaries

"Text: Know Your Scumbags, One Prevents HIV"

Like I said: subtle

After seeing many displays reminding people of the horror of AIDS and how some groups are total cock bites for remaining silent or sabotaging health programs, you really need something lighter.  Hence, condom based art.

QUICK EVERYONE TO THE CONDOMZEPLIN!

I want one...

And now...THE most awesome historical lesson ever!

CONDOM WARS! This has to be made into a movie. Picture it, Women in corsets on Victorian building top fencing with weaponized over-sized dildos.

Well after this we move onto the STD and paraphernalia room.  I'll do a full post on that but I had to share this one poster that I thought was special.

A poster showing the supposed negative health effects of masturbation.

Ah so masturbation causes..lethargy, drooling and....being Peter Lorre?

Don't let this happen to, to yooooou!

Part two to come soon.

Putting Things In Perspective.

Few things recently give me that sense of "spiritual".  This vid though is one

It really puts things in perspective, showcasing the amazingness of the vast universe we're in
and how unbelievable it is that we, right now, are against all odds, lucky enough to be born
in the time when our species is first opening it's young eyes and taking it's first blinking
infantile look at the larger cosmos.

Then that was immediately contrasted with this article for me...

Houston voters elect first openly gay mayor

"The election battle leading up to Saturday's balloting was marked by fierce campaigning and anti-gay rhetoric. Parker is a lesbian who has never made a secret or issue of her sexual orientation. If she wins, Houston will become the largest U.S. city to ever have an openly gay mayor..."

"Parker is a lesbian who has never made a secret or an issue of her sexual orientation. But that orientation became focus of the race in recent weeks after anti-gay activists and conservative religious groups endorsed the 61-year-old Locke and sent out mailers condemning Parker's "homosexual behavior..."

"Locke, who would become the city's second black mayor if elected, has been trying to distance himself from the anti-gay attacks while courting conservative voters who could tip the race in his favor.

"Although Locke has condemned the divisive rhetoric, two of his key supporters contributed money to a conservative political action committee that sent out an anti-gay mailer earlier this month, urging voters not to pick Parker because she was endorsed by the "gay and lesbian political caucus...

"Campaign finance reports show Ned Holmes, finance chairman of Locke's campaign, and James Dannenbaum, a member of the campaign's finance committee, each gave $20,000..."

Really...amazing...just flipping amazing.  It has been about half a century since man first
set foot on another cosmic body, on another world...and yet this.  THIS of all things, is almost
as major an acomplishment.

Why should it matter at all your canidates sex preferences or race or anything?
How really is our country that equal and post racial when it's still an issue.
Maybe now more of an issue than it was ten years ago.

20,000 bucks to remind people about the evils of teh gay...imagine that being so
important to people that they're willing to pay out that much.
people won't pay out the 1 buck needed to feed a child in bumblefuck Africa,
but to keep an undesirable out of office, wallets part like the red sea.
Uganda's gearing up to lock away their undesirables and execute them...an idea
supported and promoted by us Americans, and our news barely covers it.
Even beyond that countless undesirables live in poverty, or slavery
or abuse or famine or under tyranny, for really petty reasons.

I really just wish so much that the people who feel its so important to keep their
undesirables down, people who feel their god lets them be a dick, who feel the
right to be greedy fucks, could look at the sky and see that galaxy rise.
I mean imagine that, there's all that stuff out there...all that to be discovered...
and a lot here to still do, and it's just sitting by the wayside ignored due to
bullshit.

I think it's a tragedy and failing each and everyone one of us should feel
personally that Carl Sagan never lived long enough to see us reach the stars.

"The sky calls to us
If we do not destroy ourselves
We will one day venture to the stars
"

Mysticism in Science

My SO and I saw 9 a week or two ago.  It as an enjoyable movie, had some fun elements, but was weak in some areas.  The SO mentioned an anti-science bias message she noticed that troubled her a bit (feel free to beat me if I misrepresent you, babe).  We sort of waved it away and accepted the movie as a mixed bag, visuals alone worth seeing, but that sort of puts it in the level of impressive experimental film or proof of concept rather than a truly great animated masterpiece like Up.  We still loved 9 as an alternate time line alchemy story, but I have to admit I was disappointed that the twist revelation was 'the soul' and 'alchemy' over something more unique.  It's not like the harder sci-fi hasn't presented more than enough actual technological stand ins for the soul or magic that you couldn't have made something surprising.  I can't help compare it to The Secret of NIHM which added mystical elements to the story but wasn't virulently anti-science when it came to it (least not as I can remember), or Full Metal Alchemist where the story setting is a place where the magic of alchemy works as if it was scientific (ie has set rules and principles stated or at least implied).

 He Fried for Your Sins

Anyway I thought I'd link to this article sort of bitching about the ascience in it as well.  I'm not really knee jerky about this sort of thing, it doesn't bother me too much as I can accept fully psionics and the soul showing up in Babylon 5 or the force in Starwars, but for some reason the message of 'science is bad' keeps seeming to regurgitate back into my craw when I think about 9.  Not NEARLy as much as it did in the Bones premiere but...still.  I want to know what do you think?  Did 9 have a strong "SCIENCE BAD" message?  Can you think of any other kid movies that did?  What's the line between soft sci-fi and pro-mysticism propaganda?

Hey!  Glen Beck's in this movie!

Kurt Cameron has led to something positive

Which thus led to this...

Any chance for me to whore out my own doodles.
